So what made you decide to use underfloor heating?

I had never used it before but I am in the process of building an extension in my home to create space for a large (60 m2) family room/kitchen and had already decided to use underfloor heating. I'd read so much about it I was keen to try it out and I was intrigued to see how the radiant heat it delivers would feel as compared to the convective heat supplied by radiators. I was in the process of getting quotes when I found out I'd won the competition. I was advised that a room of this size required approximately 1,000 worth of system, which included 300m of pipe and a Heatmiser fully programmable thermostat. I was also supplied with a tacker gun to enable me to push in the pipe staples without bending down. Of course I got it all for free!

How did delivery go?

The whole process was totally hassle-free. I was given a delivery date a few days in advance and I got a follow-up call from Continental to check it had arrived safely.

How did you find installation?

To be honest it was very straightforward. It took me about four hours for me to fit it and staple it into the insulation, my partner Stephanie assisted for a bit and then our two-year-old daughter Martha decided she wanted to help as well! I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. We had ordered the Flowmaster Alupex pipe which held its shape so made it simple to control - all in all it was pretty painless! Our builder came and screeded it and then it was just a case of leaving it to dry out for four weeks before laying the flooring. We've got it up and running but the glazing for the room still hasn't been completed so we're still waiting to feel the full effect although it's certainly taken the chill off! We also haven't quite decided on which type of flooring we want but at the moment top of the list is some kind of slate.

Did you need any technical advice?

I did call Continental's technical line once. I needed advice about insulating the pipes under a kitchen unit. The query was handled immediately - I was told to slip some electrician's conduit over the pipes. I was impressed with the instructions which came with the system, they were so simple to follow it really didn't matter that I hadn't installed UFH before.

Will you be recommending UFH going forward to your customers?

Definitely. It's not something as a business I'd really taken much notice of before - our core business is central heating installation and boiler replacement in existing homes. But having installed UFH for myself I'd feel very happy about integrating it into the business. I've already decided that I will be more pro-active about looking for work that involves installing UFH and also suggesting it to clients.
