Chapel conversion

Underfloor heating case study

At Continal Underfloor Heating we received an enquiry from a regular customer who was looking to install underfloor heating (UFH) in a former chapel in Tibberton, Gloucester.

First built in 1839, the chapel had been the home of a Methodist congregation until it was closed in 2018 and, earlier this year, work began to convert the property into a domestic home.

The client originally wanted to install an overfloor system into the 83m2 property, but the almost 200 year-old property was poorly insulated and so our expert Technical Advisers were concerned about the high heat losses present in the building.

After discussing the property with our client and learning more about the building fabric, we determined that we could provide a more energy efficient system by specifying a screeded system instead of an overfloor type.

By using our screeded systems, which include Continal® and SUPERflex™ technology, our customer was able to improve the property’s insulation values and help reduce the overall heat losses, which means their clients will be able to enjoy a warmer home and a more cost-effective system.

“I chose Continal Underfloor Heating because I’ve used them before and have always been impressed by their technical knowledge. They were able to quickly answer my questions and the fact that they recommended a different system than the one I thought I needed, and were able to explain why that system would be the better choice for that property, gave me real confidence that I was installing the right product and solution for the job.”

A new screed floor was being laid as part of the property’s overall renovation work, and so our client was first able to lay a new layer of insulation across the base sub-floor, before installing our SUPERflex™-16 pipe. The pipe was fixed to the insulation using strong Continal® staples that ensure the pipes stay securely in position. Once the pipe had been laid throughout the building and fully tested, the pipe system was covered by a liquid screed to create the final floor.

SUPERflex™-16 pipe is an extremely flexible pipe that has a bend radius of less than 100mm, making installation quick and easy in any property. Installers can fit the pipe safe in the knowledge that it is robust and will not kink. We have designed SUPERflex™ to be a specialist UFH pipe with a life span of more than 50 years, so installers and their customers can be comfortable that the quality pipe will work efficiently for years to come.
