Cottage renovation offers a seamless finish

Underfloor heating case study

Products: TileFix®-18 overfloor system, SUPERflex™-12 pipe

Continal Underfloor Heating received an enquiry from a heating engineer whose client was looking to fit underfloor heating (UFH) in a property in Truro. The cottage, sited in a picturesque village setting, was undergoing an extensive renovation, with a large extension being built to maximise the owner’s living space.

The client wanted a system that would provide UFH throughout the ground floor of the existing building, as well as across the substantial extension. The older, period-style of the cottage meant ceiling heights were limited, and so it was vital that the chosen system could minimise any potential loss of height within the room.

The homeowner also wanted to re-use the existing flagstone flooring, to make sure the finished renovation was in keeping with the cottage’s distinctive style. This meant the UFH system had to be specified carefully to ensure it was compatible with that type of flooring.

After speaking with the installer and understanding all the requirements of the property, our Technical Sales Adviser recommended the use of our TileFix®-18 overfloor system, along with almost 400m of our SUPERflex™-12 pipe. TileFix®-18 is a fast-response, high-compressive strength system that has been designed to accept direct tiling with a standard tile adhesive. Typically installed over existing solid or timber deck floors, the system is compatible with ceramic, porcelain, marble and stone tiles.

Installation is simple and straightforward, as the TileFix® panels come with pre-routed pipe spaces for return loops and distribution in 100mm, 150mm and 200mm pipe spacings. TileFix® is available in 18mm and 25mm variants, meaning it can be installed in buildings where floor heights need to be kept to a minimum with no loss of performance.

SUPERflex™-12 is a premium, highly flexible five-layer oxygen barrier pipe designed specifically for underfloor heating. It has a bend radius of less than 75mm, and is highly flexible to reduce kinks and make installation easy.

The low-profile nature of the system meant that Continal was also able to supply overfloor panels that would make the extension floor level with the floor of the original building, creating a seamless transition between the old and new spaces.

Continal provided all the necessary plans and system designs for the project and, by providing our customer with a single point of contact, we were able to answer all his questions during the quotation and installation process, as he could always speak to someone who was already familiar with the project.
